It’s critical that you take care of your cast iron skillets, with the right care they will last forever. You can wash the cast iron skillet one time when you first get it, but NEVER again. Never even dream of running the skillet through the dishwasher.
Seasoning: Cast-iron skillets must be seasoned before using. Coat the skillet with cooking oil and bake the skillet in the oven at 350 degrees for at least an hour. The oil creates a natural non-stick coating. Dry the skillet with paper towels; your skillet is now ready to use.
Cleaning: For best results, rinse the pan with hot water immediately after cooking. If you need to remove burned-on food, scrub with coarse salt and a potato. If the pan develops rust scrub it with steel wool and re-season it. To prevent rust, dry the skillet thoroughly and lightly coat the cooking surface with cooking oil.
